History
From Scout to Shipwright: The Roots of a Boatyard Legend
Allan Nye Scott was born in Montreal in 1924 and discovered his love for boats early—during naval service in the South Pacific in World War II—before studying chemistry at McGill and joining yacht clubs across Ontario. His passion and experience led him into the realm of boat manufacture: in 1968, he took on J.J. Taylor of Toronto, transforming the company into a fiberglass specialist producing the iconic Contessa 26 and 32 sailboats.
Nye Yachts and the Alberg Era (1974–1988)
In 1974, Allan relocated to Belleville, founding Nye Yachts. He secured molds for the Alberg 22, then commissioned Carl Alberg to design the Alberg 29 in 1976, with 80 built until 1985; later adding the Alberg 34 with a six-boat run. These boats became renowned for their craftsmanship—hand-laid fibreglass, solid long keels, and teak finishes—as well as their blue-water capabilities, exemplified by a 2012 transatlantic crossing by “Long Reach”.
Reinvention: Nye Boat Works (Post-1988)
After Nye Yachts’ closure in 1988, Allan returned to Belleville and shifted to repair and restoration. In 2003, he sold the business, which moved to Foxboro under new owner Nathan Bresett, becoming Nye Boat Works, continuing to preserve and revive generations of fibreglass and wooden boats in the Bay of Quinte region.
Legacy and Lifework
Allan was beloved not only for his innovations in boatbuilding but also for his generosity. At the Belleville Yacht Club, a bar made from the hull of an Alberg 29 stands as a tribute to his enduring influence on the local sailing community. He continued to advise and build right up until his passing in 2012, remembered fondly by fellow sailors:
“He was always friendly … asking about ‘the vessel’ and how things were going”
